During the height of cherry blossom season, the historic streets, gardens, castles, rivers, and quiet countryside of Hokuriku become washed in soft shades of blush and ivory. For an intimate elopement, it is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting.
This spring celebration began in the heart of Kanazawa, before unfolding through some of the region's most beautiful gardens and landscapes, eventually leading us into the peaceful countryside of Toyama.
It was a day about slowing down, wandering, and letting the beauty of Japan become part of the story.
Getting Ready in Old-World Kanazawa
The morning began quietly at a hotel filled with antique Japanese-Western charm.
Rather than a modern, minimalist space, the hotel felt like a glimpse into another era — a beautiful meeting point between traditional Japanese craftsmanship and Western-inspired elegance. Vintage details, warm wood, aged textures, and carefully preserved architectural elements created an intimate atmosphere for the beginning of the day.
As the couple got ready, there was a wonderful sense of anticipation.
Outside, Kanazawa was already beginning to glow with spring.
The cherry blossoms were at full bloom, and every moment seemed to carry that unmistakable feeling that the season would be gone almost as quickly as it arrived.
Vows Beneath the Cherry Blossoms at Kanazawa Castle
From the hotel, we made our way toward Kanazawa Castle.
The historic castle grounds offered a breathtaking setting for the vows. Against the centuries-old architecture, delicate cherry blossoms framed the couple as they exchanged promises to one another.
There was something particularly beautiful about the contrast — the permanence of the castle and the fleeting nature of the blossoms.
Cherry blossoms have long carried a quiet symbolism in Japan. They bloom brilliantly, but only for a short time, making them a fitting backdrop for a wedding day: a reminder to be fully present for beautiful moments while they are here.
Under the spring canopy, the couple exchanged their vows in an intimate ceremony surrounded by the soft colors of the season.
No elaborate production was needed.
Just the two of them, and the blossoms.
From the City to Rural Japan
As the day continued, the scenery gradually changed.
We left the historic center behind and ventured toward the countryside.
This transition was one of the most memorable parts of the journey. The elegant gardens and castle landscapes of Kanazawa gave way to quieter roads, traditional homes, open fields, and the slower rhythm of rural Japan.
And still, the cherry blossoms followed.
In the countryside, the blossoms felt different.
Less manicured.
More expansive.
Eventually, the journey continued into Toyama Prefecture, where the landscape opened even further.
Here, the cherry blossoms stretched along riverbanks, creating long corridors of pale pink beside the water.
The riverside became another chapter of the day.
We walked beneath rows of blooming trees, stopping whenever the light, blossoms, or landscape created a moment worth preserving. The mountains and open countryside gave the photographs a sense of scale, while the blossoms kept everything soft and romantic.
There was no need to rush.
The couple could simply walk, talk, laugh, and take in the scenery.
And perhaps that is what made the day feel so special.
It wasn't simply a wedding followed by a photo session.
It was a journey through springtime Japan.
From a charming hotel in Kanazawa to vows beneath the cherry blossoms, the day unfolded as a journey through the beauty of Hokuriku.
